LOCATION
Alexandroupoli is a city in Thrace and the capital city of the Evros prefecture.
HOW TO GET THERE
You can reach Alexandroupoli with the following options: you can get to the city either by train or by airplane from many other Greek cities. From Athens the
Aegean Airlines and the
Olympic Air offer direct flights to the airport Dimokritos.
MONUMENTS
The most important sights are the light house, Thrace´s Ethnological Museum and the Church Museum.
ABOUT THE CITY
Until 1919 the city was named Dedeagats. The city was founded in 1875 and during the First Balkan War,in 1913, for a short time under Greek rule and was given after the Bucharest´s Agreement to Bulgaria.
1920,after the end of World War II, the city came under the control of Greece. In the same year, after the death of King Alexander, the city was renamed in Alexandroupoli.
