LOCATION

Located in southern Greece, in the middle of the island of Crete.

HOW TO GET THERE

You can get there by plane with flights by Olympic and Aegean to the airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” (HER). You also have the alternative to travel by boat with Blue Star lines and ΑΝΕΚ to the largest port of the island.

TRANSPORTATION

It is advisable to have some means of transport, depending on how you intend to travel! If you want to see the rest of the island, you will need a car since the distances are great in Crete. However, there is a regular bus service within Heraklion and also towards Chania, Rethymnon and Lasithi.

MONUMENTS

The prefecture of Heraklion is known to everyone for the archaeological sites of Knossos and Phaistos. Knossos was the center of the Minoan civilization and covers an area of 20,000 square meters. Phaistos covers 8500 square meters and was a religious and an economic center of the Minoan period. Also of interest and historical value are many Venetian buildings, such as the Fortress Koules.

MUSEUMS

You should dedicate some time at the numerous museums that are available. The Archaeological, Historical and Ecclesiastical are most interesting.

BEACHES

You can find beaches both in the north, and south part of the county. The north beach is more crowded, since its warmer there, and it’s more organized. The most famous beaches are: Coast, Agia Pelagia, Matala, Kokkini Hani.

Heraklion is a destination that offers its visitors many options, since it combines the comforts of the city with the relaxation of the island. Like the rest of Crete,you will try eat tasteful local food and you will drink plenty of raki, while you will be impressed by the hospitality of the locals.
